PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Greetings Lions and Lioness Members:

Well, a whole year has passed and our Club comes to a new year. I will be turning the gavel over to Lion Ed Decourcy and am very confident that Lion Ed will do a great job. I believe that the Walled Lake Memorial Day Parade was a great event! The Wixom Walled Lake Lions Club was well represented. There were even some of our neighboring club’s, Huron Valley Lions Club, present as well!                                                                                         I also walked in the Wixom “Relay for Life” on Saturday, May 31 with my wife, Janelle, and granddaughter, Cali Rose.  It could be a great event for our Club in the future. I can just picture some of our great vision-impaired members walking along with us! What an opportunity for our Club to help another organization, and to get some added Lions Club exposure in the Wixom area!                                                                                Although I will no longer be your President, I plan to continue supporting our Club as well as Lionism and American Citizenship. I will focus on increasing Club membership, supporting the formation of a Leo club, increased Club presence in the Wixom area, and seeking cooperation from neighboring Lions clubs.                                                          I hope that all of our members will have a great summer and that you will keep in your prayers our members who experience health issues in their lives.

Yours in Lionism and American Citizenship,

Gerry Radtke

WWL Lions visit Leader Dogs for the Blind

On May 29 Lions Ray, Jamie, Terry, Joe and Gerry (photographer) went to the Leader Dog School to meet with hosts ‘Alabaman’ Wanda Scroggins and ‘Georgian’ Mike Cox, and their Guide Dogs ‘Gibson’ and ‘Ace’, and Harold Abraham, Dir. of Tech. & Low Vision Services.

Lions J.J. is taking training to learn how to use new technology guidance systems for foot travel through their neighborhoods. A personal tour of the facilities was conducted by Wanda and Mike

CHECK OUT’ the M A G N I F I E R

On May 8 Lions Joe, Ray, Marion, Steve, and Norm (photographer) went to the Wixom Library and presented a $534 check to Library Director Lisa Hoenig to purchase magnifiers for use by patrons with limited sight. The following is reprinted from the Wixom Library Newsletter, Summer Vol. 3, No. 4 edition.

“The Wixom Library has a brand new collection of magnifying devices to assist readers with low vision.  There are a variety of shapes, sizes and strengths, so there’s bound to be one that’s right for you.  Ask at the information desk to see the collection, or attend our special program on July 18 for a professional demonstration. Magnifiers may be checked out for three weeks just like a library book. Thanks to the Wixom Walled Lake Lions Club and the Friends of the Wixom Public Library for sponsoring this important purchase.”

Veterans Honored on Memorial Day

On May 28 fellowship was experienced by WWL Lions and Lioness members who walked in the Walled Lake Memorial Day Parade. SIGHT CONSERVATION

On May 1 Lions Joe Steiger, Fariba Hickinson, and Ray Froling met with the Walled Lake ‘Geisler’ Middle School Student Service Club to present information about Lions activities, and to request the students to ‘take-on’ a project to talk to the children about what Lions Clubs do with the glasses after they get them, and the many other things the Lions do. Lion Joe Steiger returned to the school in late May to receive over 200 pair of donated eyeglasses, and to thank the students, and to present a Certificate of Apprecia-tion to their School.
